Ten women are led out of Action Rags USA into a Homeland Security van as Federal immigration agents raided and inspected Action Rags USA, a second-hand clothing warehouse on Port Houston Street, on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, in Houston. The agents have detained at least 120 workers at the plant as they conduct a major raid to investigate allegations that the company is employing illegal immigrants. The raid, involving 150 to 200 agents, was launched about 7 a.m. at Action Rags U.S.A, 1225 Port Houston, just north of the Houston Ship Channel. Officials would not specify the information that led them to plan the raid, which is at least the second major immigration enforcement action in Houston in recent months. I was just browsing the internet, because I am enjoying lunch hour with my sandwich the wifey has been packing for me daily since we’re saving four our summer trips, and was checking on TCPalm Day in Photos from yesterday to see what it looks like on my old stumping grounds.

Remember how I started my new job at the Chronicle earlier this year?… Remember?… I was catapulted into action w/ all kinds of assignments that put me on the front page.

Well, apparently that momentum is still kicking five months after as today the February winners of the Monthly Clip Contest in Region 8 of the National Press Photographers Association was announced (yeah, they’re a little behind). I earned third-place honors in the Spot News category w/ this photo:

The cool thing about all of this is (more…)

A Dream Come True

So, as you know, I proposed to Frankie yesterday. And your emails and texts are requesting photos of the big moment. Well, thanks to my bud Ben Sklar — who interned at the Associated Press w/ Frankie and I the same summer –, I now have photos to share. He emailed me a few of the better ones and I think they’re awesome. So, w/o making you read anymore, here they are:

EXTRA EXTRA… FRANKIE SAYS “YES!”

Frankie and Tay react as they read news about Frankie and Julio’s engagement on the front page of the Houston Chronicle on Friday, May 23, 2008, in Houston. The couple got engaged a day earlier in Austin and news of the event spread quickly as media outlets were promptly alerted.

This morning I woke up early and got to work. I had a surprise for Frankie and (more…)

Sure I didn’t get an A1 photo in last week’s papers. I did get a few cover shots though.

Here’s what was published on the front last week:

APRIL 29 — Cop-killer trial. (more…)
